Big Diomede and Little Diomede are two islands in the Bering Strait, between Russia and the United States. Big Diomede belongs to Russia, while Little Diomede is part of the U.S. They are only about 3.8 km (2.4 miles) apart, but Big Diomede follows Russian time, which is about 21 hours ahead of Little Diomede. Because of this, they are sometimes called the “Tomorrow Island” (Big Diomede) and the “Yesterday Island” (Little Diomede). Big Diomede is uninhabited and serves as a Russian military outpost, while Little Diomede has a small Alaskan Native community.
